Great thanks that works a treat!

NB in my situation here I am on a wireless network -- and from there
attached to the internet. The function you posted returns the same as the
preference panel - that is my (external?) ip address on MacOSX 10.4.8.

Other machines on the wireless LAN can connect using this address - can any
one out there test if you can connect to the following socket?

  IP:  172.20.169.23
  Port: 4567
