Space saving and images

At right-angles to the gradient you can stretch the image as much as  
you want and it won't band at all. In the same direction as the  
gradient you can often get away with stretching it as long as the  
original isn't something absurdly small like ten pixels. To cover the  
whole screen I'd probably stick with 256px as a sensible dimension.
