I have been playing with Linspire a bit. As I want to check video 
options out I asked Linspire support which library they are using. The 
libs that ship with it seem to play a lot of files as far as I can see.

Here is a quote from the reply:

Now I need to check if the audio and videoclipplayer properties can be 
set to use that libs. Haven´t checked that yet.
