checking removable drives

I'd like to be able to determine if an app is running from a removable 
drive.

I've found that on OS X I can call system_profiler from shell, but it 
takes between 2 and 4 seconds on my 1GHz PB.

And I've found no solution at all for Windows.

While we're waiting for implementation of BZ#101 from July 2003
("detailed drives" 
<http://support.runrev.com/bugdatabase/show_bug.cgi?id=101>), do we have 
any quick cross-platform solution for this?
