Selecting "Variable checking" is equivalent to setting 
"explicitVariables" to true - and the meaning is documented under 
Dictionary / explicitVariables   (there may be additional documentation 
elsewhere - but that's the primary place).

Note you can make this true by default - see the menu   Edit / 
Preferences / Script editor
