I'd be slightly cautious about opening the socket and not transferring 
anything, especially if you this might happen frequently (ie.. very 
frequently).  A socket opening without any data transfer (repeatedly) 
just might get picked up by an intrusion detection system as suspicious 
behaviour pattern .....
