OK, I followed Ken's suggestion, saying
• set the externals of this stack to "components/global
environment/ext.dll"
followed by saving, quitting, reopening the stack, and confirming that
• put the externals of this stack
elicited the reply
• components/global environment/ext.dll
But then when I tried
• ext_loadFont "/Users/jerry/Desktop/KillerStumps.ttf"
I received the familiar "can't find handler" error message.
Chris, I had a question about the following portion of your note:

because when I say
• answer the externalCommands of this stack
I just get empty (and indeed "the externalCommands of this stack is
empty" returns "true"). Your note suggests that when you do this you
get a different result. Is that right?
Still in the basement,
