Well, thanks to all for the help.  I finally figured out what I was 
looking for.  I can achieve the result I'm looking for by setting the 
lineHeight of the button.  Unfortunately, when it comes to menus, it 
affects the height of the menuItems as well, so it's now of no use to me 
at all.
