Well, now for something completely differente!

On OS X 10.3.8, Rev 2.5.1, the docs remember their last state just fine 
both from the toolbar and from the menu on my system.

Well, actually, they remember what section of the docs is showing. 
Individual selections aren't retained, which is probably just as well 
since I almost never want to look at the same thing twice in close 
proximity.
