& character messes up hierarchal pulldown menus

I posted two bug reports on this yesterday - 2603 and 2604.  2604 
refers to this bug and 2603 refers to the problem of single character 
options don't appear if any items in the pulldown are tab-indented.  
This is only on OS X.
