On the topic of how careful you need to be with SQL 
syntax, you might want to check out the O'Reilly
'SQL In a Nutshell'. It gives syntax and examples of 
various SLQ implementations - Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL and
MS SQL Server and is also a good deskside reference.
It will give you an idea of the problems you may encounter should you
attempt to build a 'generic' SQL library.
