Not really what you asked, but it may solve your problem: on OS X, if
you set the filetype to empty before saving a file, OS X will allocate
it to the relevant app using the file extension. The benefit of this is
that you don;t have to guess what your users have installed e.g Preview
or Adobe, Safari or Internet Explorer.
