  set the textstyle of word 1 to 2 of fld x to "italic"

to add another style to a previously existing style(s)

  get the textstyle of word 1 to 2 of fld x 
  set the textstyle of word 1 to 2 of fld x to  it & ",italic"

is that what you want?
