How to use progress bar

I do a lot of time consuming things with data and would love to have a
progress bar or something instead of just a spinning beachball. I want it to
use the number of cards in the stack as finish and then increment every 2%
of the total cards or something like that. Since I couldn't even get the
progress bar to change at all no matter what I threw at it I need some help!
