I think you are making it too hard. You don't need all that background 
editing business. This works for me:

   get "/HD/Folder/mySample.gif"
   put url ("binfile:" & it) into img 1 of grp 1

Note the use of "binfile" rather than plain "file". The replacement is 
instant.
