Visual Effects working strangely

In the primer shell I ended up with a handler like this:

on setEffect theEffect
   if theEffect is not empty then
     put "visual effect " & theEffect into effectCommand
     do effectCommand
   end if
end setEffect

I did this some time ago, so I'm not sure why I went this way, but I  
suspect I had problems similar to yours.
