Why... is the selected text deselected?

I know in HC, how that works is with a <shared text> backgound field. The
selected text remains selected no matter what card you are on. Even if you
make new cards or delete cards, it's still selected. I don't know how to
implement that in RR, but perhaps it provides a clue.
