evaluate the "it" variable in an external

Unfortunately in the case of the ask command and several others that 
use the it variable- it evaluates to empty and the response is put into 
the it variable. Maybe I'm misunderstanding though.

Am I correct that none of the posters knows how to get the it variable 
from an external- without having the external call a transcript 
function to return it?
