read from process - example wanted

Could someone please post a simple example of opening and 
reading/writing to a process?  On OSX how do you launch a process which 
requires root priviledge?

Is it possible to open a shell process?  I couldn't get it to work...  
eg
open process "/bin/bash" for update
write "cd /" to process "/bin/bash"

Mostly I'm just looking for a few pointers from anyone on the list who 
has experience working with reading/writing processes.
