Put into URL with OSX

Hello all!

If I put something in an RTF file using URL, :

put "something" into URL "file:xxxxxx" 

on OSX it makes another copy of the original file.  You now have 2 files of the
same name in the same folder, with one being newer than the other.  The original file
remains the same.  Is this normal behaviour?  If so, how do I just change the 
text in the file duplicating it? Do I have to use "open for write" and so on?
