I won't have time to play with it until Monday or Tuesday, but how about:

on mouseDown
  repeat until the mouse is up -- instead of 'while the mouse is down'
    keepStuffInAHoldingPattern
  end repeat
  doOtherStuffLikeAMouseUpDoes
end mouseDown

...?
