Is there a way to dynamically construct a script statement and then execute that statement?

Yes: the "do" command.

> -- the constructed statement at this point should be:

Here you'd have
do execvar
You can even build the string in the command line if you prefer:
do "put" && quote & widget & quote && "into" && zVarName
