USB driver

Does anybody knows how to send data to or receive data from a USB device
from within MC? Things like "the drivernames" don't work. Neither can you
obtain a list of available devices by reading the file "/dev/tty" (see rev
documentation re "open driver"), apparently because this is a hidden file
used by the system. I remember there was some discussion about these issues
about two years ago, including the promise that the problems should be
solved in the next version, but this does not seem to be the case.
Help is very welcome. I'm using a Mac (OS X 3.9) with MC 2.6.2.
