find something, return false?

I'm trying to find a simple word in a field.

--> find string "link" in fld "EmbeddedIndexTemplate"

... works like a charm.  It finds and highlights the word for me.  But 
if I ask for the result it returns empty.

--> if the result is empty then beep

... am I using this correctly?  MC 2.5.1
