I would still recommed supporting 800x600 gracefully. But I'm wondering if
_optimizing_ for that resolution is the best way to go, if so now then will
it still hold up in a year?

Looking at the breakdown of resolutions on the survey posted, a strong
majority are already at 1024x768 of greater.  With all new Macs and most
(all?) new PCs shipping with a default higher than 800x600, it seems that
some day the smaller resolution will go the way of 640x480.  Not today,
maybe not next week, but potentially worth planning for as long as 800x600
is still gracefully supported.
